David Smith

Originally educated as a marine biologist, David Smith has followed a career track which has included researching fish physiology, lecturing in the Malawi Polytechnic, teaching biology in UK schools, digging on archaeological sites and heading up the Centre for Evaluation of IT in Education at the National Foundation for Educational Research. David has held research fellowships at Huddersfield Polytechnic and Southampton University. At Southampton, he and Morley Sage published the influential Sage and Smith Report, "Computers in Education, a Framework for Research" (ESRC, London, 1983).

In the late eighties, he and a group of colleagues from the University of East Anglia founded AVC Multimedia Ltd, developing commercial multimedia and health data management systems for clients such as the World Health Organization. At the end of 1995, David joined the then Newport School of Art and Design as Course Leader, to design and set up new undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Multimedia. He is now Head of Research and Enterprise in the School of Art, Media and Design, University of Wales College Newport. He is responsible for the School’s Applied Enterprise Centre, and is involved in a range of consultancies and applied research projects.

He has published widely in both conventional and multimedia formats.
