DIETRICH BRANDT, born 1937, Berlin, Germany, holds a Ph.D.
in Physics (University of Mainz, Germany). He taught Physics
at several German Universities, at the University of London
and at M.I.T. (USA). From 1974 until 1984, he was responsible
for establishing the Centre for Research and Development in
Higher Education (HDZ), University of Technology (RWTH), Aachen,
Germany. After the successful development of this Centre, it
was merged in 1984 with the Department of Computer Science in
Mechanical Engineering (IMA), within the same University. Since
then he has been Deputy Director of the integrated Department
HDZ/IMA. Today this Department has got about 30 full-time research
staff, 15 technical and administrative support staff and about
80 research students. The external funds of the Department amount
to about 5 million EURO per year (industry, Government, German
Research Council DFG, and European Commission etc.). Dr. Brandt
has been largely responsible for the concepts of these different
projects, for organising the research within these projects
and the related teaching programmes of the Department. The emphasis
of his research and teaching has been on complex human-machine
systems in their industrial context: specifically the impact
of automation and information systems on society, the natural
environment and education.
From 1993 to 1999, he was Chairman of the Committee on Social
Impact of Automation within the International Federation of
Automatic Control (IFAC). In this role, he was organising and
running several International Symposia "Automated Systems
based on Human Skill": Berlin 1995, Kranjska Gora, Slovenia,
1997, and Aachen, 2000. These Symposia have found wide-spread
international recognition.
For many years he has closely cooperated with universities,
industry and unions in Germany and all over Europe. He also
holds close links of cooperation to universities in the USA,
Central and Southern America, Australia, India and Japan. He
has been engaged in founding 5 different engineering enterprises
in the region of Aachen with excellent business success.
He is the author of a well-known book on Information Technology
and Networks Today (1995). He wrote a comprehensive research
report on Human-Centred Approaches to Production in Europe,
published by FAST/MONITOR, 1991. He has been guest editor of
several issues of the European Journal of Engineering Education,
the Journal of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing,
and the Journal for Artificial Intelligence and Society. He
has published about 50 papers in refereed journals and contributed
to about 30 international conferences as an invited speaker,
among them IFAC, SEFI, HAAMAHA etc.. He has contributed about
10 chapters to different books on development of technology
and organisation and related learning processes in enterprises.
He is the co-editor of the Department´s own series of
research publications: so far more than 40 books have been published
in this series by Augustinus Aachen Publ.. In 2000, he was the
author of the MEMORANDUM Information and Communication which
was discussed and agreed upon by the participants of the Professional
Congress Information and Communi-cation within the World Engineers`
Convention, June 19-21, 2000, Hannover, Germany.
He has supervised more than 30 PhD theses, among them: one
in Italy (in cooperation with the University of Siena); one
in Australia (with the University of Sydney); three in the U.K.
(London University and Brunel University).
In 2001, the Association of Engineers Germany VDI awarded him
their Medal of Honour.
