DR. FRANCESCO GARIBALDO
IpL (Istituto per Lavoro) Bologna (Italy)

Francesco Garibaldo is Director of IpL, Bologna. He graduated in Political Science, with specialisation in Sociology, at the University of Bologna. From 1972 to 1991 he carried out directional tasks for the metal workers' trade union (FIOM), affiliated to the Cgil, among these appointments, general secretary of FIOM in the Emilia Romagna Region. In 1992, became director of research for IRES national, and moved to Bologna sa Director of IpL in 1998. He has undertaken and directed a wide ranging application projects which include research on sociological themes: analysis of the productive structure, work organisation and technological innovation; the analysis of productive decentralisation in Emilia Romagna- this was the first research of this kind to be accomplished in Italy which led to a lot of other similar work. Subsequent research progressively shifted on to themes concerning the productive system , work and work organisation.
He conceived and organised various international conferences on the above themes, among which: 1) the Japanese model of firm organisational with the participation of numerous experts from various universities; 2) the problems of so-called atypical jobs in Europe in 1991 on the automobile sector in Europe in 1993, on international job perspectives. He also organised in October 1993, the European Conference on the Social Shaping of New Technologies. He has also arranged numerous Italian conferences. Over the years, he has presented the results of several studies concerning the impact of technological innovation in the factory in the Universities of Amherst, Massachusetts; Rutgers, New Jersey; Columbia, New York; Sociologisch Institut, Amsterdam; Fakultat fur Soziologie, Bielefeld; Confederationes de Trabajadores de Mexico, Mexico City; Universit=E0 Federale di Rio de Janeiro - COPPE, Rio de Janeiro; Compi=E9gne University, Compi=E9gne, Paris; Istituto di Ricerca Duarte, Montevideo, Uruguay.

He is a member of the International Association for Industrial Relations, a member of the Italian Association of Sociology, a member of the International Advisory Board of Concepts and Transformation - International Journal of Action Research and Organizational Renewal, a member of the Consiglio Nazionale dell'Economia e del Lavoro (CNEL: National Council of Economy and Work) for the period 1995-2000 and he was also a member in the preceding term, a mMember of the European research group on the study which evaluates applied technology, within the FAST project, a member of the Consortium Work and Technology within a DG V programme. In addition he has co-ordinated a number research studies: a European research group: BRITE - Euram, on global world production; a study on the Modernisation of European Industry conducted by a group of European researchers; a study on economic integration in the Southern Cone of Latin America in comparison with that in Europe; IRES - FIOM research on the integrated factory of the FIAT plant; IRES-GIANO-MET-FIOM research on working class identity in new working realities, a network on the economical and industrial consequences of Information Communication Technology on Italian society; a research study in the FORCE programme on Technological Innovation and Skills. He is currently coordinating the working group of Telecities - a European network - on teledemocracy ; the Community Empowerment Through Distance Training in the Information Society - CEDIS - programme under ISPO initiative.
